So proud of my mom right now. For so many reasons but the most recent is the amazingly researched, passionately argued article about how the plan to build a new juvenile detention center in Baltimore is linked to racism and the prison industrial complex.
I only have the article in PDF form right now but here’s a picture of some of the protests going on to stop the prison, they’re building pop-up rec centers and schools. Cause guess what kids need more than prisons?

Folks are asking: What’s next? How can we help CeCe? Below are some solid ways to help CeCe as she awaits sentencing and while she serves her time in prison. Please spread the word, post and re-post. Don’t let the world forget about her, don’t let her be just another news story you read about once. She’s a human being who needs her community, she needs to know she’s still loved. *Write letters to CeCe in jail to show her yr love.http://supportcece.wordpress.com/get-involved/write-cece/ *Send CeCe books & magazines, info here: http://supportcece.wordpress.com/get-involved/send-cece-books/ *Write letters to the editor asking them to write responsible articles about CeCe’s case. We NEED to keep her story in the news. *Write yr own articles and blog post, post, re-post, forward, spread her story far and wide. *Organize a fundraiser for CeCe. It cost a lot to survive in prison. She needs money for commissary, phone calls, writing materials and to fund trips for her family and supporters to visit her. *Donate directly to her. This is a link to the only official CeCe McDonald donation site. (Or you can go to her website & there’s a link there. www.supportcece.wordpress.com)https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=gyKH7WOoXPQWY58xoiixnUSfWU_e9_2o2I7bV4HbKOl__WRfyimqkoUlC6i&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d195a86f1d217942f7415cf1b2a661693

A portion of my keynote address at USC on Sunday, where I discussed CeCe McDonald, Paige Clay and #girlslikeus everywhere. I was the first trans speaker in the ceremony’s 18-year history, but this speech was so much more than me.

Beautiful. The blog post that accompanies this is wonderful and thoughtful as well.

After falling asleep to the beautiful chaos that exploded in the streets all over the world yesterday, we awoke to the unfortunate news that CeCe McDonald will most likely be spending 41 months in prison for stabbing a worthless piece of Nazi scum to death after he attacked her in Minneapolis last…

This says it better than I ever could

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 2, 2012

ChrishaunCeCe” McDonald Accepts Plea Agreement to Reduced Manslaughter Charge
Racism, Transphobia in Legal System Continued Assault McDonald Survived, Supporters Charge

Contact: Katie Burgess, Executive Director, Trans Youth Support Network,…

This is incredibly disheartening and depressing. My co-worker and I have been following this case together and he was so shocked to see the news of CeCe’s plea today. We just sat in silence at our desks for awhile. He told me that even though he knew that there would be racism, homophobia and transphobia in the justice system, he thought even as a queer person of color he would at least still have the right to self defense. This case proves otherwise, as have many cases that came before. The only “legitimate” option according to our justice system, according to our society as a whole, for queer people of color is to lay down and die.

CeCe, I wasn’t there in the courtroom to see what happened. I don’t know what you had to face to make this decision, whether you had to confront nothing but bad choices and not-quite-as-bad choices or if this was actually a victory. I couldn’t be there in physical solidarity, being two states away mourning my grandfather. And I don’t know what to tell you now except that you are not alone. Our hearts break for you even as you remain amazing with your beautiful, radiant smile. I couldn’t be there on Monday but I will be there June, 4th and for anything else I can do.

This Is What Happened to CeCe

This is a guest post by Redlark. Redlark is a white, lower-middle-class queer activist working a pink collar union gig in the Twin Cities. They are working with an amazing group of friends and allies of CeCe McDonald to get CeCe’s charges…
